23:1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:
23:1 치리자와 함께 음식을 먹으려고 앉아 있거든, 네 앞에 있는 자가 누구인지 잘 생각하라.
23:2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [be] a man given to appetite.
23:2 만일 네가 탐식하는 사람이거든 네 목에 칼을 두라.
23:3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful meat.
23:3 그의 진수성찬을 탐내지 말라. 그것들은 속이는 음식이니라.
23:4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
23:4 부자가 되려고 애쓰지 말며, 네 자신의 지혜를 그칠지니라.
23:5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
23:5 네 눈을 허무한 것에 주목하려느냐? 재물은 반드시 스스로 날개를 만들어 하늘을 향하여 독수리처럼 날아가리라.
23:6 Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
23:6 악한 눈을 가진 자의 음식을 먹지 말며, 그의 진수성찬을 탐내지 말라.
23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee.
23:7 이는 그가 마음에 생각하는 대로 그도 그러한즉, 그가 네게 먹고 마시라고 할지라도 그의 마음은 너와 함께 있지 아니함이라.
23:8 The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
23:8 네가 조금 먹은 것도 토하겠고 네 아름다운 말들도 잃어 버리리라.
23:9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
23:9 어리석은 자의 귀에 말하지 말라. 이는 그가 네 말의 지혜를 업신여길 것임이라.
23:10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
23:10 옛 지계표를 옮기지 말며 아비 없는 자의 밭에 들어가지 말라.
23:11 For their redeemer [is] mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
23:11 그들의 구속주는 막강하시니, 그가 너를 대적하여 그들을 변호하시리라.
23:12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
23:12 훈계를 네 마음에 두며, 지식의 말들에 네 귀를 기울이라.
23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
23:13 아이로부터 징계를 거두지 말라. 네가 그를 매질할지라도 그가 죽지 아니하리라.
23:14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
23:14 너는 그를 매질해야 하리니, 그리하면 그의 혼을 지옥으로부터 구해 내리라.
23:15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
23:15 내 아들아, 만일 네 마음이 현명하면 내 마음, 곧 나도 즐거우리라.
23:16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
23:16 정녕, 네 입술이 바른 것들을 말하면 내 속마음이 즐거우리라.
23:17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
23:17 네 마음으로 죄인들을 부러워하지 말고 온종일 주의 두려움 가운데 있으라.
23:18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
23:18 이는 분명히 마지막이 있겠고 또 네 기대가 끊어지지 아니할 것임이라.
23:19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
23:19 내 아들아, 너는 듣고 현명하게 되어 네 마음을 그 길로 인도하라.
23:20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
23:20 술을 많이 마시는 자와 고기를 탐식하는 자와 함께하지 말라.
23:21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.
23:21 술취하는 자와 탐식하는 자는 가난하여질 것이요, 잠자기를 좋아하는 자는 낡은 옷을 입을 것임이라.
23:22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23:22 너를 낳은 네 아버지에게 귀를 기울이고, 네 어머니가 늙어도 경히 여기지 말라.
23:23 Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
23:23 진리를 사고, 그것을 팔지 말라. 지혜와 훈계와 명철도 그리하라.
23:24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have joy of him.
23:24 의로운 자의 아버지는 크게 즐거워할 것이요, 현명한 아이를 낳는 자도 그로 인하여 기뻐하리라.
23:25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
23:25 네 아버지와 네 어머니가 기뻐할 것이요, 너를 낳은 여인이 즐거워하리라.
23:26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
23:26 내 아들아, 네 마음을 내게 주며 네 눈을 나의 길들에 주목하라.
23:27 For a whore [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.
23:27 음녀는 깊은 함정이요, 타국 여인은 좁은 구덩이라.
23:28 She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
23:28 그녀는 또한 먹이를 찾듯이 숨어 기다리며 사람들 가운데 범죄자들을 늘리느니라.
23:29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
23:29 화가 누구에게 있느냐? 슬픔이 누구에게 있느냐? 다툼이 누구에게 있느냐? 불평이 누구에게 있느냐? 까닭없는 상처가 누구에게 있느냐? 충혈된 눈이 누구에게 있느냐?
23:30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
23:30 술에 빠진 자들에게 있으며, 혼합된 술을 찾아 다니는 자들에게라.
23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.
23:31 술은 붉고 잔에서 빛을 내며 매끄럽게 내려가나니, 너는 술을 쳐다보지도 말라.
23:32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
23:32 그것은 마침내 뱀처럼 물며, 살모사처럼 쏘리라.
23:33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
23:33 네 눈이 타국 여인을 볼 것이요, 네 마음이 패역한 것들을 발설하리라.
23:34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
23:34 정녕, 네가 바다 한가운데 누운 자 같을 것이요, 돛대 꼭대기에 누운 자 같으리라.
23:35 They have stricken me, [shalt thou say, and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
23:35 네가 말하기를 "사람들이 나를 쳤어도 나는 아프지 아니하였고, 그들이 나를 때렸어도 나는 감각이 없었도다. 내가 언제 깨어날까? 내가 그것을 다시 찾으리라." 하리로다.
