4:1 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
4:1 그러나 산발랏은 우리가 성벽을 건축한다는 것을 듣자 화를 내고 크게 격분하며 유대인들을 조롱하더라.
4:2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?
4:2 그가 그의 형제들과 사마리아의 군대 앞에서 선언하여 말하기를 "이 유약한 유대인들이 무엇을 하는 것이냐? 그들이 힘을 보강하겠는가? 그들이 제사를 드리려는가? 그들이 하루 만에 끝장을 내려는가? 그들이 불타 버린 쓰레기더미에서 돌들을 일으키려는가?" 하더라.
4:3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite [was] by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.
4:3 그때 그 곁에 있던 암몬인 토비야가 말하기를 "그들이 건축하는 것 위에 여우 한 마리가 올라가도 그들의 돌 성벽을 부수어 내리리라." 하더라.
4:4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
4:4 오 우리 하나님이여, 들으소서, 우리가 멸시를 받았으니, 그들의 욕을 그들의 머리 위로 돌이키사 그들이 사로잡혀 간 땅에서 먹이가 되게 하시고,
4:5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked [thee] to anger before the builders.
4:5 그들의 죄악을 덮지 마시며 그들의 죄를 주 앞에서 지우지 마소서. 이는 그들이 건축하는 자들 앞에서 주를 격노케 하였음이니이다.
4:6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
4:6 그리하여 우리가 성벽을 건축하여 모든 성벽이 연결되어 그 절반에 이르렀으니, 이는 백성에게 일할 의사가 있었음이더라.
4:7 But it came to pass, [that] when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, [and] that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
4:7 그러나 산발랏과, 토비야와, 아라비아인들과, 암몬인들과, 아스돗인들은 예루살렘 성벽이 완성되고 파손된 부분이 그치기 시작하였다 함을 듣자, 심히 분노하여
4:8 And conspired all of them together to come [and] to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
4:8 그들이 함께 음모하기를 "예루살렘으로 가서 싸워 방해하자." 하더라.
4:9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
4:9 그러므로 우리가 우리 하나님께 기도하고 그들 때문에 밤낮 그들에 대하여 파수꾼을 세웠더라.
4:10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and [there is] much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
4:10 그때 유다가 말하기를 "짐 나르는 자들의 힘이 쇠잔한데 흙더미는 많으니, 우리가 성벽을 건축하지 못하리라." 하였으며
4:11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
4:11 우리의 대적들은 말하기를 "그들이 알지도 못하고 보지도 못하게 우리가 그들 가운데로 들어가서 그들을 죽이고 공사를 중단하게 하자." 하며
4:12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us [they will be upon you].
4:12 그들 곁에 거하는 유대인들도 와서 열 번이나 우리에게 말하기를 "너희가 우리에게로 돌아올 모든 곳으로부터 그들이 너희에게 임하리라." 하더라.
4:13 Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, [and] on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
4:13 그러므로 내가 성벽 뒤 낮은 곳과 높은 곳에 배치하되, 그들의 족속을 따라 칼과 창과 활 가진 사람들을 배치하고
4:14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, [which is] great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
4:14 돌아본 후 일어나서 귀족들과 치리자들과 백성의 남은 자들에게 말하기를 "너희는 그들을 무서워 말고, 위대하시고 두려우신 주를 기억하여 너희 형제, 너희 자녀, 너희 아내와, 너희 집을 위해 싸우라." 하였더라.
4:15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
4:15 그 사실이 우리에게 알려졌다는 것을 우리 원수들이 들은 후, 하나님께서 그들의 계략을 무산시키셨으므로 우리 모두는 성벽으로 돌아가 각자 자기 일을 하였더라.
4:16 And it came to pass from that time forth, [that] the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers [were] behind all the house of Judah.
4:16 그 때로부터 내 종들의 반은 공사를 하였고, 다른 반은 창들과 방패들과 활들과 갑옷들을 지녔으며, 치리자들은 유다 온 집 뒤에 있었더라.
4:17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, [every one] with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other [hand] held a weapon.
4:17 성벽 위에서 건축하는 자들과, 짐을 지우는 자들과, 짐을 나르는 자들은 각자 한 손으로는 공사를 하고 다른 손에는 무기를 지녔더라.
4:18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and [so] builded. And he that sounded the trumpet [was] by me.
4:18 건축자들은 각자 자기 옆에 칼을 차고 건축하였으며, 나팔 부는 자는 내 옆에 있었더라.
4:19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work [is] great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
4:19 내가 귀족들과 치리자들과 백성의 남은 자들에게 말하기를 "공사가 크고 방대하여 우리가 성벽 위에서 나뉘어져 서로 멀리 떨어져 있으니
4:20 In what place [therefore] ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
4:20 너희가 어디서든지 나팔 소리를 듣거든 거기로 모여 우리에게 오라. 우리 하나님께서 우리를 위하여 싸우시리라." 하였더라.
4:21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
4:21 그리하여 우리가 일하였고, 그 중 절반은 동틀 때부터 별이 보일 때까지 창을 지녔더라.
4:22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
4:22 그 때에 또 내가 백성에게 말하기를 "각자 자기 부하와 함께 예루살렘 안에서 유숙하여, 밤에는 우리에게 파수가 되고 낮에는 일하여야 하리라." 하였더라.
4:23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, [saving that] every one put them off for washing.
4:23 그리하여 나나, 내 형제들이나, 내 부하들이나, 나를 따르는 파수보는 사람들이나, 우리 중 아무도 몸을 씻기 위하여 옷을 벗을 때를 제외하고는 옷을 벗지 아니하였더라.
