17:1 And he said to his disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come!
17:1 Jesus said to his disciples, "Occasions for stumbling are bound to come, but woe to anyone by whom they come!

17:2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.
17:2 It would be better for you if a millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea than for you to cause one of these little ones to stumble.

17:3 Take heed to yourselves; if your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him;
17:3 Be on your guard! If another disciple sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive.

17:4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, and says, `I repent,' you must forgive him."
17:4 And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, 'I repent,' you must forgive."

17:5 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"
17:5 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

17:6 And the Lord said, "If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, `Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.
17:6 The Lord replied, "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.

17:7 "Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, `Come at once and sit down at table'?
17:7 "Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here at once and take your place at the table'?

17:8 Will he not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'?
17:8 Would you not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink'?

17:9 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?
17:9 Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded?

17:10 So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"
17:10 So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'"

17:11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Sama'ria and Galilee.
17:11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee.

17:12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance
17:12 As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance,

17:13 and lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us."
17:13 they called out, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"

17:14 When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed.
17:14 When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were made clean.

17:15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice;
17:15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.

17:16 and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
17:16 He prostrated himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan.

17:17 Then said Jesus, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?
17:17 Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they?

17:18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"
17:18 Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"

17:19 And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."
17:19 Then he said to him, "Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well."

17:20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, he answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed;
17:20 Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, "The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed;

17:21 nor will they say, `Lo, here it is!' or `There!' for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you."
17:21 nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or 'There it is!' For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you."

17:22 And he said to the disciples, "The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not see it.
17:22 Then he said to the disciples, "The days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

17:23 And they will say to you, `Lo, there!' or `Lo, here!' Do not go, do not follow them.
17:23 They will say to you, 'Look there!' or 'Look here!' Do not go, do not set off in pursuit.

17:24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of man be in his day.
17:24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.

17:25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
17:25 But first he must endure much suffering and be rejected by this generation.

17:26 As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man.
17:26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so too it will be in the days of the Son of Man.

17:27 They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
17:27 They were eating and drinking, and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed all of them.

17:28 Likewise as it was in the days of Lot -- they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built,
17:28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building,

17:29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom fire and sulphur rained from heaven and destroyed them all --
17:29 but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from heaven and destroyed all of them

17:30 so will it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed.
17:30 --it will be like that on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

17:31 On that day, let him who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away; and likewise let him who is in the field not turn back.
17:31 On that day, anyone on the housetop who has belongings in the house must not come down to take them away; and likewise anyone in the field must not turn back.

17:32 Remember Lot's wife.
17:32 Remember Lot's wife.

17:33 Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.
17:33 Those who try to make their life secure will lose it, but those who lose their life will keep it.

17:34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.
17:34 I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.

17:35 There will be two women grinding together; one will be taken and the other left."
17:35 There will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken and the other left."

17:36 ("Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.")
17:36

17:37 And they said to him, "Where, Lord?" He said to them, "Where the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together."
17:37 Then they asked him, "Where, Lord?" He said to them, "Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather."
