17:2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light.

17:3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Eli'jah, talking with him.

17:4 And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli'jah."
17:4 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

17:5 He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
17:5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!"

17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe.
17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear.

17:7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear."
17:7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid."

17:8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
17:8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

17:9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead."
17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

17:10 And the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Eli'jah must come?"
17:10 And the disciples asked him, "Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

17:11 He replied, "Eli'jah does come, and he is to restore all things;
17:11 He replied, "Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things;

17:12 but I tell you that Eli'jah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of man will suffer at their hands."
17:12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands."

17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

17:14 And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and kneeling before him said,
17:14 When they came to the crowd, a man came to him, knelt before him,

17:15 "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water.
17:15 and said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; he often falls into the fire and often into the water.

17:16 And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him."
17:16 And I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him."

17:17 And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me."
17:17 Jesus answered, "You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me."

17:18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly.
17:18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly.

17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?"
17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?"

17:20 He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, `Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you."
17:20 He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."

17:21 ("But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting")

17:24 When they came to Caper'na-um, the collectors of the half-shekel tax went up to Peter and said, "Does not your teacher pay the tax?"
17:24 When they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and said, "Does your teacher not pay the temple tax?"

17:25 He said, "Yes." And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from others?"
17:25 He said, "Yes, he does." And when he came home, Jesus spoke of it first, asking, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their children or from others?"

17:26 And when he said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free.
17:26 When Peter said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the children are free.

17:27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself."
17:27 However, so that we do not give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook; take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a coin; take that and give it to them for you and me."
