1:1 Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth (month), in the fifth (day) of the month, as I was among the captives by the river Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
1:1 Now it came about in the thirtieth year, on the fifth [day] of the fourth month, while I was by the river Chebar among the exiles, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

1:2 In the fifth (day) of the month, which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachin's captivity,
1:2 (On the fifth of the month in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's exile,

1:3 the word of Jehovah came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of Jehovah was there upon him.
1:3 the word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and there the hand of the LORD came upon him.)

1:4 And I looked, and, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, a great cloud, with a fire infolding itself, and a brightness round about it, and out of the midst thereof as it were glowing metal, out of the midst of the fire.
1:4 And as I looked, behold, a storm wind was coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually and a bright light around it, and in its midst something like glowing metal in the midst of the fire.

1:5 And out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man.
1:5 And within it there were figures resembling four living beings. And this was their appearance: they had human form.

1:6 And every one had four faces, and every one of them had four wings.
1:6 Each of them had four faces and four wings.

1:7 And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot; and they sparkled like burnished brass.
1:7 And their legs were straight and their feet were like a calf's hoof, and they gleamed like burnished bronze.

1:8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings (thus):
1:8 Under their wings on their four sides [were] human hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them,

1:9 their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
1:9 their wings touched one another; their [faces] did not turn when they moved, each went straight forward.

1:10 As for the likeness of their faces, they had the face of a man; and they four had the face of a lion on the right side; and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four had also the face of an eagle.
1:10 As for the form of their faces, [each] had the face of a man, all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and all four had the face of an eagle.

1:11 And their faces and their wings were separate above; two (wings) of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.
1:11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another [being,] and two covering their bodies.

1:12 And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; they turned not when they went.
1:12 And each went straight forward; wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go, without turning as they went.

1:13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches: (the fire) went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.
1:13 In the midst of the living beings there was something that looked like burning coals of fire, like torches darting back and forth among the living beings. The fire was bright, and lightning was flashing from the fire.

1:14 And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.
1:14 And the living beings ran to and fro like bolts of lightning.

1:15 Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold, one wheel upon the earth beside the living creatures, for each of the four faces thereof.
1:15 Now as I looked at the living beings, behold, there was one wheel on the earth beside the living beings, for [each of] the four of them.

1:16 The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto a beryl: and they four had one likeness; and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel within a wheel.
1:16 The appearance of the wheels and their workmanship [was] like sparkling beryl, and all four of them had the same form, their appearance and workmanship [being] as if one wheel were within another.

1:17 When they went, they went in their four directions: they turned not when they went.
1:17 Whenever they moved, they moved in any of their four directions, without turning as they moved.

1:18 As for their rims, they were high and dreadful; and they four had their rims full of eyes round about.
1:18 As for their rims they were lofty and awesome, and the rims of all four of them were full of eyes round about.

1:19 And when the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
1:19 And whenever the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them. And whenever the living beings rose from the earth, the wheels rose [also.]

1:20 Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went; thither was the spirit to go: and the wheels were lifted up beside them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
1:20 Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction. And the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings [was] in the wheels.

1:21 When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up beside them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
1:21 Whenever those went, these went; and whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the earth, the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings [was] in the wheels.

1:22 And over the head of the living creature there was the likeness of a firmament, like the terrible crystal to look upon, stretched forth over their heads above.
1:22 Now over the heads of the living beings [there was] something like an expanse, like the awesome gleam of crystal, extended over their heads.

1:23 And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two which covered on this side, and every one had two which covered on that side, their bodies.
1:23 And under the expanse their wings [were stretched out] straight, one toward the other; each one also had two wings covering their bodies on the one side and on the other.

1:24 And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings like the noise of great waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a noise of tumult like the noise of a host: when they stood, they let down their wings.
1:24 I also heard the sound of their wings like the sound of abundant waters as they went, like the voice of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.

1:25 And there was a voice above the firmament that was over their heads: when they stood, they let down their wings.
1:25 And there came a voice from above the expanse that was over their heads; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.

1:26 And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone; and upon the likeness of the throne was a likeness as the appearance of a man upon it above.
1:26 Now above the expanse that was over their heads there was something resembling a throne, like lapis lazuli in appearance; and on that which resembled a throne, high up, [was] a figure with the appearance of a man.

1:27 And I saw as it were glowing metal, as the appearance of fire within it round about, from the appearance of his loins and upward; and from the appearance of his loins and downward I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness round about him.
1:27 Then I noticed from the appearance of His loins and upward something like glowing metal that looked like fire all around within it, and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw something like fire; and [there was] a radiance around Him.

1:28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of Jehovah. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
1:28 As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so [ was] the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it,] I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking.
