28:1 Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are overcome with wine!
28:1 Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, And to the fading flower of its glorious beauty, Which is at the head of the fertile valley Of those who are overcome with wine!
28:2 Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one; as a tempest of hail, a destroying storm, as a tempest of mighty waters overflowing, will he cast down to the earth with the hand.
28:2 Behold, the Lord has a strong and mighty [agent;] As a storm of hail, a tempest of destruction, Like a storm of mighty overflowing waters, He has cast [it] down to the earth with [His] hand.
28:3 The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot:
28:3 The proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim is trodden under foot.
28:4 and the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be as the first-ripe fig before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
28:4 And the fading flower of its glorious beauty, Which is at the head of the fertile valley, Will be like the first-ripe fig prior to summer; Which one sees, [And] as soon as it is in his hand, He swallows it.
28:5 In that day will Jehovah of hosts become a crown of glory, and a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people;
28:5 In that day the LORD of hosts will become a beautiful crown And a glorious diadem to the remnant of His people;
28:6 and a spirit of justice to him that sitteth in judgment, and strength to them that turn back the battle at the gate.
28:6 A spirit of justice for him who sits in judgment, A strength to those who repel the onslaught at the gate.
28:7 And even these reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they stagger with strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
28:7 And these also reel with wine and stagger from strong drink: The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, They are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink; They reel while having visions, They totter [ when rendering] judgment.
28:8 For all tables are full of vomit (and) filthiness, (so that there is) no place (clean).
28:8 For all the tables are full of filthy vomit, without a [single clean] place.
28:9 Whom will he teach knowledge? and whom will he make to understand the message? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts?
28:9 "To whom would He teach knowledge? And to whom would He interpret the message? Those [just] weaned from milk? Those [just] taken from the breast?
28:10 For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little.
28:10 "For [He says,] 'Order on order, order on order, Line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there.'"
28:11 Nay, but by (men of) strange lips and with another tongue will he speak to this people;
28:11 Indeed, He will speak to this people Through stammering lips and a foreign tongue,
28:12 to whom he said, This is the rest, give ye rest to him that is weary; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
28:12 He who said to them, "Here is rest, give rest to the weary," And, " Here is repose, "but they would not listen.
28:13 Therefore shall the word of Jehovah be unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
28:13 So the word of the LORD to them will be, "Order on order, order on order, Line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there," That they may go and stumble backward, be broken, snared, and taken captive.
28:14 Wherefore hear the word of Jehovah, ye scoffers, that rule this people that is in Jerusalem:
28:14 Therefore, hear the word of the LORD, O scoffers, Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
28:15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
28:15 Because you have said, "We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we have made a pact. The overwhelming scourge will not reach us when it passes by, For we have made falsehood our refuge and we have concealed ourselves with deception."
28:16 therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone) of sure foundation: he that believeth shall not be in haste.
28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone [for] the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes [in it] will not be disturbed.
28:17 And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding-place.
28:17 "And I will make justice the measuring line, And righteousness the level; Then hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, And the waters shall overflow the secret place.
28:18 And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
28:18 "And your covenant with death shall be canceled, And your pact with Sheol shall not stand; When the overwhelming scourge passes through, Then you become its trampling [place.]
28:19 As often as it passeth though, it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass through, by day and by night: and it shall be nought but terror to understand the message.
28:19 "As often as it passes through, it will seize you. For morning after morning it will pass through, [anytime] during the day or night. And it will be sheer terror to understand what it means."
28:20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.
28:20 The bed is too short on which to stretch out, And the blanket is too small to wrap oneself in.
28:21 For Jehovah will rise up as in mount Perazim, he will be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
28:21 For the LORD will rise up as [at] Mount Perazim, He will be stirred up as in the valley of Gibeon; To do His task, His unusual task, And to work His work, His extraordinary work.
28:22 Now therefore be ye not scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong; for a decree of destruction have I heard from the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, upon the whole earth.
28:22 And now do not carry on as scoffers, Lest your fetters be made stronger; For I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts, Of decisive destruction on all the earth.
28:23 Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.
28:23 Give ear and hear my voice, Listen and hear my words.
28:24 Doth he that ploweth to sow plow continually? doth he (continually) open and harrow his ground?
28:24 Does the farmer plow continually to plant seed? Does he [continually] turn and harrow the ground?
28:25 When he hath levelled the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and put in the wheat in rows, and the barley in the appointed place, and the spelt in the border thereof?
28:25 Does he not level its surface, And sow dill and scatter cummin, And plant wheat in rows, Barley in its place, and rye within its area?
28:26 For his God doth instruct him aright, (and) doth teach him.
28:26 For his God instructs and teaches him properly.
28:27 For the fitches are not threshed with a sharp (threshing) instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.
28:27 For dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge, Nor is the cartwheel driven over cummin; But dill is beaten out with a rod, and cummin with a club.
28:28 Bread (grain) is ground; for he will not be always threshing it: and though the wheel of his cart and his horses scatter it, he doth not grind it.
28:28 [Grain for] bread is crushed, Indeed, he does not continue to thresh it forever. Because the wheel of [his] cart and his horses [eventually] damage [it,] He does not thresh it longer.
28:29 This also cometh forth from Jehovah of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.
28:29 This also comes from the LORD of hosts, [Who] has made [His] counsel wonderful and [His] wisdom great.
